Export Diversification for Commodity-Dependent Countries
This was a project I did right after graduating my high school. I was going through my Linked in when I discovered about an organization called Microphone Initiative. They were organizing a one-on-one mentorship program on SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). Although I have been taught about SDGs in our social science class I have only associated it with sustainable growth, and sustainability from an environmental side but never touched up on economic sustainability and how it affects our life and the global economy as a whole.
So, I wanted to learn more about the ways economic sustainability is essential.
After I was selected, I was paired up with a mentor. It was an eight-week-long program where we met twice every week to learn terminologies and study past economic research papers and case studies to ingrave the concepts. My mentor was from Thailand having completed high school in the same year as I did but was like an Economic wizard. He knew the geopolitical tensions and their direct and indirect co-relation on the global economy. This was fascinating for me to know how one event in one country is impacting the economy of another country making some countries rich and some poor.
For the 8-weeks we studied the cases studies and pulled out lessons and analyzed their implications and brainstorm new ways and efficient techniques to solve that problem.
I wanted to do something new, work on something that has not been researched more, identify a gap, and give my very best and I found just that. While reading the literature on sustainable economy a concept of Export Diversification struck out to me. I wanted to unravel what it could contribute to my research and I happen to watch a YouTube video on African countries and they mentioned something about Exports and Economy and it just clicked and I knew I wanted my case study to be on “Export Diversification for Commodity-Dependent Countries”.

So, what did I learn from the program?
- Firstly, It introduced me to the concepts of Economy and its study areas (Macro-Economics and Micro-Economics)
- I got the knowledge to analyze the economic situation of an instituion, state or country.
- Found out ways to shift the world towards a sustainable economic trajectory.
- Discussed about wealth inequalities in the world and how that gap is growing Year on Year.
- Learned important research terms and techniques like citation, plagiarism, and data-driven studies.
